NSAIDs are a class of drugs including ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and celecoxib, and are the most common medications used during pregnancy. However, there are concerns about the use of these drugs during pregnancy, although studies on the risks so far have been inconsistent. Researchers at the University of Montreal (Canada), CHU Sainte-Justine, Quebec (Canada) and the Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l ‘Analyse de l’ Information in Rennes (France), conducted a study to determine the risk of miscarriage associated with NSAIDs. We studied a total of 4705 cases of miscarriage up to 20 weeks of gestation, 352 (7.5%) of these pregnant women taking NSAIDs. Of the 47,050 women in the control group that had abortions, 1,213 (2.6%) had been exposed to NSAIDs. Data comes from the Quebec Pregnancy Registry, which provides information on prescriptions, doctor visits, diagnoses, and hospitalizations during pregnancy. Women in the study were aged between 15 and 45 years on the first day of gestation and were insured by the Régie de l ‘Assurance Maladie du Québec (RAMQ), covering their medications for at least a year before and during the pregnancy. Exposure to NSAIDs was defined as taking some kind of anti-inflammatory, at least once during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy or within two weeks before the start of pregnancy. Ibuprofen is the only NSAID available without prescription in Quebec, although women in the RAMQ drug plan would have to purchase prescriptions. Naproxen was the NSAID most commonly used followed by ibuprofen. “The use of NSAIDs during early pregnancy was associated with a statistically significant increased risk (2.4 times) risk of spontaneous abortion,” says Dr. Anick Bérard of the Université de Montréal and director of the Research Unit Medications and Pregnancy at CHU Ste-Justine. The increased risk associated with diclofenac and lowest risk with rofecoxib. However, the dose of NSAIDs did not appear to affect the hazard rate. These findings are consistent with other studies, but are new with respect to the types and doses of NSAIDs. “Given that the use of NSAIDs during early pregnancy increases the risk of congenital malformations, and our results suggest an effect on the risk of spontaneous abortion detected clinically, NSAIDs should be used with caution during pregnancy,” conclude the authors. |
| Varied diet to overcome the crisis post-holiday Posted: 03 Jan 2012 11:16 PM PST . ![]() This has been explained on Sunday in a statement the Government, which has detailed that this syndrome causes physical and mental performance of people is lower than usual until they get re-adjust. Katerine Dr. Garcia stressed that the return of the holiday is a good time to come up with new dishes in the kitchen, but has stated that the diet “to lose weight” during the post-holiday period “should not be an imposition, a punishment, but a new and exciting life habit. “ Garcia explained that many patients with excess weight and associated problems after the summer period, especially middle-aged people, because during the summer “we can gain weight if you do not care about our food, as it ice cream can be abused, if they are creamy many calories as well as nuts, alcoholic beverages and foods especially “precooked” and outside the home, which are generally high-calorie, “he underlined. Faced with this situation, should adopt a positive attitude, avoiding “patching the health problem” that is overweight. “This is achieved by learning to eat healthy on a diet not only closed, it is very easy to get bored and, therefore, abandon,” said endocrinologist. The loss of dietary habits during the summer “at the bottom means” a wrong learning from them, so the galena considered “fundamental” general education of the patient to let you know the basics of healthy eating. According to Garcia, this work “can not be done in one day”, but requires several sessions, so that the first query is made on a diet “closed” which is given to the patient “as a guide to learning the diet healthy, that he is capable of producing. “ The endocrinologist said the practice of a hypocaloric balanced diet and regular physical exercise as the main recommendations to combat obesity and maintaining good health, while favoring the adaptation to the routine after the “excesses” of the summer . |

The LTS is able to quickly determine the size, shape and number of nanoparticles in suspension. In the article, published in “PLoS ONE”, the researchers describe how LTS is applied to detect specific DNA species. The research was carried out in collaboration with the Environmental Change Initiative of Notre Dame (ECI, for its acronym in English). ECI scientists are currently working with environmental DNA (eDNA) as part of its monitoring of Asian carp in the Great Lakes region. Scientists at Notre Dame shows that the LTS technique has many advantages over the techniques of traditional DNA detection, this new technique is very sensitive and only takes a few seconds to score a sample genetically with the presence or absence of species. As they say, LTS technology is much faster, convenient and cost effective than current detection methods and, ultimately, could reach the sensitivity necessary to eliminate the need for chain reaction (PCR). Although this paper describes the use of LTS in the detection of invasive species, Notre Dame researchers believe the technique could also serve as an important tool in the detection of human pathogens, and as an indicator of the presence of genetic diseases such as cancer. |
| “Aspirin” to treat migraine and tension headache Posted: 03 Jan 2012 05:13 PM PST ![]() The findings, published in “American Headache Society, Headache”, reveal that acetylsalicylic acid may be effective even when these two pains are intense. The study includes a retrospective analysis conducted between 1998 and 2002 on acetylsalicylic acid made based on 2127 patients with acute migraine and individual study in 326 patients with episodic tension headaches. Numerous studies have shown that “Aspirin” Bayer is well tolerated by following the instructions of the prospectus. Specifically, in Spain, is licensed for the symptomatic relief of occasional mild or moderate pain, including headaches, dental, menstrual cramps, muscle or back pain or fever. |
