A healthy lifestyle can prevent cancer

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 11:23 PM PST

The total amount of the number of cancers has increased by 20 percent in less than a decade to the point are detected each year about 12 million new cases per year along with other chronic diseases like heart disease, lung disease and diabetes make up the biggest health challenges, according to the fund.

In a report on noncommunicable diseases (NCD), the WRCF said that political leaders have the unique opportunity to combat a wave of cancer and other ailments related to lifestyle. This group of diseases annually cause more than 36 million deaths according to World Health Organization (WHO), and increase to 52 million in 2030.

As global health experts point to many deaths from NCDs, including about one third of all common cancers could be prevented by reducing excessive alcohol consumption, improving diet, discouraging smoking and promoting physical activity.

To achieve these goals requires the implementation of government measures such as taxes or limits on advertising to overcome these bad habits. These measures may involve a conflict with the industries of alcohol, snuff and food. As noted by the medical and scientific adviser WRCF, Martin Wiseman, “with millions of lives at risk around the world, the stakes are incredibly high.”

“People still do not realize that factors such as alcohol and obesity affect the risk of cancer, while at the same time, from television advertising on food, our society functions in a way that discourages people to adopt healthy habits, “he added.

The UN meeting, scheduled for 19 and 20 September in New York (USA), is aimed at preventing this global health threat. Still, there are fears that the major players (U.S., Europe and Japan) are reluctant to commit to setting goals, taxes and laws to reduce the burden of these diseases.

Practicing Pilates to fight breast cancer

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 05:21 PM PST

As I recall, many women tend to leave the physical activity performed by detecting breast cancer, a fact that remains during treatment and even when it has overcome cancer.

However, numerous studies have shown that physical exercise is an effective and safe alternative to improve the quality of life of affected women because, well known physiological benefits as increased functional ability, increased muscle strength, reduced fatigue or increased pain control, induces an emotional improvement.

In this sense, GEICAM suggest that “a very good choice” may be the pilates, being “a type of exercise that adapts to all ages and fitness, even the sick or convalescent.”

Also, remember that encourage a reduction in anxiety and depression, improve self-esteem, cause a greater sense of control and satisfaction with life are some of the potential benefits of this practice.

Experts recommend starting with two-three sessions with a particular monitor that will monitor that does not feel any discomfort, while recognizing that later, when the patient knows what it is and the basic postures, we recommend joining sessions group and even practice at home.

Along with the chapter on pilates, “Geysalus” in this issue includes an article about the role of genetic counseling units in cancer, since in the majority of tumors there is no prior genetic predisposition.

According to doctors recommend Ares Ignacio Blanco and Solanes, authors of the report, evidence is accompanied by a genetic counseling (genetic counseling), both before and after procedures.
